Assessment tool

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

This unit of competency has been developed for Engineering Tradesperson – Mechanical apprenticeship training and the recognition of trade-level skills in non-computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

Where high level production machining applications are undertaken unit MEM07041 Perform production machining should be selected.

Where set-up and operation of electro-discharge machines (EDM) is required unit MEM07014 Perform electro-discharge machining (EDM) operations should also be selected.

Where machining is undertaken without undertaking any set up, including mounting of tools, setting of speeds, feeds and other operational parameters unit MEM07024 Operate and monitor machine and process and unit MEM07025 Perform advanced machine and process operation, should be selected as appropriate.

Where the selection and use of precision measurement is required unit MEM12003 Perform precision mechanical measurement should also be selected.

Where substantial marking out is required unit MEM12006 Mark off/out (general engineering) should also be selected.

Where the selection and use of power tools/hand held operations is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Operations include one (1) or more of the following:

parallel cutting

slotting

planing

drilling

knurling

cutting flats

non-precision surface grinding operations

Materials include one (1) or more of the following:

ferrous

non-ferrous

Measuring instruments include one (1) or more of the following:

micrometres

vernier calipers

calipers

steel rules

dividers

scribers

Tools include the following:

cutting tools

tool holders

Machining parameters include one (1) or more of the following:

speeds

feeds

stops

coolant and cutting lubricants

Machines include one (1) or more of the following:

lathes

mills

planers

shapers

slotters

surface grinder

Maintenance and adjustments include one (1) or more of the following:

machining parameters

slide and collar adjustment

cleaning and lubrication

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
